Unit : 01

DC Generator

Principle, practical generator, yoke, pole core and pole shoe, pole coils, armature core, armature winding, pole pitch, conductor_ coil and winding element, EMF equation of generator, iron loss, total loss in DC generator, condition for maximum efficiency, characteristics of DC generators, separately excited generator, no load curve, series generator, compound wound generator.

Unit : 02

DC Motor

Motor principle, comparison of generator and motor action, significance of back emf, voltage equation of motor, condition for maximum power, speed of DC motor, motor characteristics- series motor, shunt motor, compound motor. Comparison of shunt and series motor, necessity of starter, shunt motor starter, three-point starter, four-point starter.

Unit : 03

Transformer

Working principle, construction, core type and shell type transformer, elementary theory of ideal transformer, emf equation, voltage transformation ratio, transformer on no load, transformer on load. Losses and efficiency of transformer condition for maximum efficiency.

Unit : 04

Induction Motor

Classification of AC motor, induction motor, general principle, construction, squirrel cage rotor, phase wound rotor, production of rotating field, three phase supply, slip, torque equation of induction, starting torque of squirrel cage and slip ring motor, condition for maximum starting torque, effect of change in supply voltage on starting torque,.

Single phase motor
